YWAM. THE BIRTH OF A MOVEMENT
Youth with a Mission (YWAM) began with a vision in 1960. Loren Cunningham saw waves of young people advance in stages and eventually covered the whole earth. Loren believed that the Great Commission could be completed in our time – to reach every nation on earth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thus he founded YWAM. Therefore, the drive to reach every people is both our biblical responsibility, and inherent in our earliest roots as a mission, permeating our corporate calling.
God in his wisdom has built YWAM layer upon layer over the years in pursuit of that initial vision. First the enthusiasm and energy of the young people were used in summer outreaches. Training soon became a necessary part of the preparation. We grew strong in the nations where people and money are initially available. Then God added a variety of activities over time as ministries were born. New nations joined in, each with their unique contribution to the overall world evangelisation effort. The waves are growing and we are progressing toward the goal to reach the farthest corners of the unreached world.
YWAM SINGAPORE. RECEIVING THE WORLD, REACHING ASIA
Today, YWAM Singapore is a growing part of this dynamic global movement of mobilising the worldwide church to reach the peoples of Asia. As a mission, we see ourselves serving as a springboard from which many launch off into the Asian harvest fields. In fact, for more than 150 years, Singapore’s strategic port has served to refresh travelers, replenish their supplies and release them to their final destinations.
Today, along with churches and other Christian organisations in Singapore, we recognise that being the Gateway to Asia is our identity and destiny as a nation.
Our national giftings of training and organisation also make Singapore a natural hub for the exchange of ideas and resources, a platform for partnership possibilities and a launching pad into Asia. Through these ways, we continue to fulfil our spiritual role of refreshing, replenishing and releasing laborers for the harvest fields. Singapore will be a stepping stone for the global church to come through, be equipped and released to realise kingdom-sized goals of reaching Asia’s billions through kingdom partnerships.
SET UP TO SERVE YOUR UNIQUE NEEDS
Since our establishment in 1973, our mission experience has shown us that going is as much a process as it is a response to the call to go.
We understand that the mission mobilising, training and sending process involves every step – from creating mission awareness, to personal character development, training in biblical truths, ministry and cross-cultural skills, and finally sending the mission worker out, with ongoing member care and long-term partnership with the sending church. This can be represented as follows:
We remain prayerfully flexible to serve the unique processes of an individual’s journey of preparation. As a mission, we are set up to serve individuals, teams and churches who desire to get involved in missions as World Christians. A World Christian is one who is committed to world evangelisation and has found a role to fulfil that commitment. Such roles may include one who goes, one who sends, one who mobilises and one who welcomes.
Our core departments – the Go Centre, Training Centre and Placement Centre, supported by our Administration Department and Community Life Ministry are developed to serve World Christians at different stages of discovering missions and eventually going forth to serve in the field long-term. In this preparation process, we desire to see people thrive in the harvest fields of their calling.
